Bentota Galapata Rajamaha Vihara

Bentota Galapata Rajamaha Vihara

After passing the Bodhimalwa Viharam, a little further along the roundabout, you will find the Hungantota Gramaniladhari domain, and there is a side road to the left of the main road. A short distance from there, the Bemthota Galapata Rajamaha Vihara, shining on a rock face, will be seen. A lotus pond was built on its soil. When climbing the steps of Galtalawe, you can see a cell letter on the right side, which explains the diplomatic relations that existed with the city of Benthota.
Although the founding date of this temple is uncertain, it is possible that it was built at the same time as the other Rajamaha temples. Because the ancient ruins and Vanavasa temple genealogy also mentions the Bentota Galapata Rajamaha temple.
A dental relic of Maha Kasyapa, one of the ordained monks of Gautama Buddha’s reign, resides here and it is said that it was buried here by his brother Devanampiyatissa during the reign of King Dutugemunu. It is said that these relics were brought to this country from Dambadi by the arahants of that time. Also, it is clear to everyone that the stone Uluwassa here is a very excellent design.
Showing the pride of the town of Bentota, the Kashyapa Dalada Perahera, which is held annually on the day of Unduwap Pura Pasaloswaka Pohoya, perfectly demonstrates the cultural and historical value of the area. It is also mentioned in the sources that King Parakramabahu II performed pujopahara for Kasyapa Dalada. Bemthota Galapata Rajamaha Viharay can be introduced as a place that attracts local and foreign tourists.
