After passing the Bentota Bridge that connects the Southern Province and the Western Province, and coming to the south about three hundred meters, you will meet the Bentota Round Road or Raja Mawatha on the left. You can see the temple on the left after about another hundred meters on that road.
Udakotuwa Raja Maha Vihara is situated on a small hill in a beautiful environment. If you look from the top of the mountain, you can see the beautiful Bentara River flowing nearby and the Bentara bridge that leads to the south side. It is also a place that attracts local and foreign tourists. The huge Buddha statue built on the edge of the river is a place that is respected and loved by everyone.
It is mentioned in the old book that his brother King Saddhatistha, who became the king after the death of King Dutugemunu, was the pioneer of this temple. It is also said that after 1505 it was affected by foreign invasions from time to time. The Bodhi Rajayana here also has a long history.
